Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What is an IBAN (International Bank Account Number)?
An IBAN is an internationally agreed standard (ISO 13616) consisting of up to 34 alphanumeric characters used to uniquely identify an individual bank account across international borders, primarily across the European Union, UK, Middle East, and worldwide.
How does the MOD-97 algorithm validate an IBAN?
The MOD-97 check (ISO 7064) moves the first 4 characters to the end, converts letters into numbers (A=10, B=11... Z=35), and calculates the modulo 97 remainder. A mathematically valid IBAN always produces a remainder of exactly 1.
Does India use IBAN for bank accounts?
No. India does NOT use IBAN. For international wire transfers into Indian bank accounts, you must provide your standard Account Number + the bank’s SWIFT/BIC Code.
Which countries require an IBAN for wire transfers?
All 27 European Union countries, UK, Switzerland, Norway, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey, and over 80 countries worldwide require mandatory IBANs for processing bank payments.
What is a SEPA transfer and does it require an IBAN?
SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) is a cashless payment mechanism across Europe that allows fast, low-cost Euro cross-border transactions using IBAN numbers.
What is the BBAN inside an IBAN?
BBAN (Basic Bank Account Number) refers to the last 12 to 30 characters of the IBAN containing the specific national bank code, branch code, and customer account number formatted according to national rules.
Can someone withdraw money from your account using only your IBAN?
No. An IBAN only allows money to be SENT into your account. No unauthorized third party can withdraw funds without your direct debit mandate or bank authentication.
What is the maximum character length of an IBAN?
Under ISO 13616, an IBAN can have a maximum length of 34 characters. For example, German IBANs are 22 characters, French IBANs are 27 characters, and Malta IBANs are 31 characters.
